Early Keyboard Instruments

instrument NEW INSTRUMENTS

All my new instruments are the result of careful study and research and are based closely on surviving original examples. Individually handbuilt to order from carefully selected materials, my instruments are an expression of my love for harpsichords and passion for fine craftsmanship.

I undertake almost every aspect of design and construction myself and each instrument is built with the requirements for the specific customer very much in mind. But harpsichords have to work well in the real world and my extensive and continuing experience of hiring instruments helps me to build new harpsichords that not only sound and feel very good to play, but are also durable and reliable.

For many years I have specialized in the building of Italian harpsichords and Flemish instruments based on the work of the Ruckers family. But I also regularly build French and German instruments and am always very interested to consider undertaking new projects and commissions.

INSTRUMENT HIRE

Harpsichords are available for hire for concerts, broadcasts, recording, tours and festivals.  Excellent reliability, reasonable rates and a full transport, tuning and standby service based on 30 years experience. In association with colleagues I am able to supply and tune small chamber organs. I also occasionally have  instruments available for longer term rental.

MAINTENANCE AND TUNING

Routine maintenance and tuning visits can be arranged. More extensive maintenance and servicing including complete re-stringing, re-voicing and regulation is carried out, usually in my Bexley workshop but in some cases on-site, by arrangement.

REPAIRS AND RESTORATION

Over the years I have undertaken a considerable number of very major repairs and restorations. In the well equipped workshop many badly damaged or long neglected instruments have been returned to first class playing order. Insurance repair work is regularly undertaken and detailed written assessments provided when required.

TOOLS AND ACCESSORIES

I offer comprehensive range of Tools and Accessories for harpsichord owners including tuning keys, spare strings, made to measure padded covers. Please request a full catalogue (online version available soon).

SECOND HAND INSTRUMENTS

I usually have a small number of good quality, fully overhauled secondhand instruments for sale. Stock is constantly varying but availability of good instruments is very limited. Instruments are sold on behalf of existing owners on a commission basis and I’m always interested to hear of new instruments for sale. I offer a straightforward service with clear costings and a modest commission.

KIT HARPSICHORDS

I may possibly be interested in purchasing one or two kit unfinished or abandoned kit harpsichord projects. If you have a part completed Zuckermann, Hubbard or Paris Workshops kit that you wish to dispose of I would be pleased to hear from you.

COURSES IN TUNING AND MAINTENANCE

Since 1998 I have been running occasional one-day courses in Basic Harpsichord Maintenance. More recently in collaboration with clavichord builder Edmund Handy we are also offering similar one-day courses in Practical Tuning.
